Introduction to Black Hat Trainings

Trainings are a core component of Black Hat events, but for anyone who may not have ever attended a Training course themselves, and has wondered exactly what Black Hat Trainings entail, or how they differ from the other benefits attendees can expect to receive from attending Black Hat events, please find a rundown of Black Hat Trainings placed below.

Black Hat Trainings are led by the information security industry’s top trainers and professionals, and provide a unique hands-on experience in a dynamic classroom environment for attendees. As the cybersecurity industry’s most established and in-depth security event series, Black Hat is the event series where all career levels and academic disciplines convene to collaborate, network, and discuss the cybersecurity topics that matter most to them–-and Black Hat Trainings provide a unique and dynamic environment to do just that. Held as part of Black Hat events, alongside Briefings, Black Hat Arsenal, Features, and more, Trainings are also held as standalone events.

Trainings are hand-selected from the Call For Trainings (CFT) process, where those interested in leading a Training course at Black Hat events submit their ideas, plans, and course information to Black Hat for consideration. Once submissions are received, members of the Black Hat Training Review Board review each submission for its uniqueness, overall content expertise, and accuracy before hand-selecting the specific courses for the event.

The selected courses are also categorized into tracks, or topics. Attendees can then filter through the tracks to find the Training that works best for them. Course offerings vary between events, due to a variety of factors, such as CFT submissions, regional needs, and more. Since Black Hat’s content comes directly from the cybersecurity community, this can also cause the tracks to vary from event to event, but popular tracks often include pentesting, network technology, open source intelligence (OSINT), data science, machine learning, and more.

Regardless of the track(s) students attend, students will walk away with crucial takeaways pertinent to the focus of the track they choose. To help students in their course selection, specific Key Takeaways can be found within the description of each Training course. For example, Key Takeaways for the course, “Advanced APT Threat Hunting & Incident Response,” include understanding how to investigate, detect, and respond to APT-level incidents with advanced attack techniques, developing the ability to perform enterprise-level incident response and hunting on endpoints, cloud environments (Azure/M365), and network logs, as well as creating a stronger understanding of APT attacks, evasive anti-forensics techniques, persistence mechanisms, and lateral movement methods.

In addition to an outline of Key Takeaways, the description of each Training course also provides information around which roles and interests may best align with each course (which can be found in the “Who Should Take This Course” section), student requirements, what students should bring, as well as what students can expect to be provided with during the course.

Courses span a variety of skill levels, from beginner to intermediate to advanced, so no matter how much in-depth knowledge and practice students would like to acquire at the next Black Hat event, there is sure to be a course that aligns with their expertise. So whether that is a 2-day course that takes place ahead of the main days of the conference or a 4-day course that begins ahead of the main days of the conference and continues through to the final day of the conference, attendees can be sure to find a Training that works well with their schedule.

For those who may not be able to make it in-person to Las Vegas this year, select Black Hat Trainings are also offered in a virtual format via Zoom.
